Sustainable Business Funding in France

Is your business at the beginning of its green journey? If so, you might need financial help to implement green practices effectively. Grants and loans provided to businesses are a great way to boost your sustainable and economic development. We have created a list of options available in France that might benefit used device businesses.

We have previously published articles on green funding in other countries. Read our blog posts about grants and loans in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and the USA

Green Grants in France

A grant is non-repayable funding typically provided for specific purposes. Usually funded by governments or organizations, grants support projects within a particular area of interest.

When looking for grant opportunities for your business, look for options provided by organizations on different levels: local, regional, governmental, and European Union.

Prepare a project that complies with the grant requirements and will economically and sustainably benefit your business. For used device businesses, this could involve implementing Reeva, a phone testing robot. Reeva completely automates device processing, contributing to the circular economy and digitalization.

We have prepared a list of grants available in France that support small and medium businesses on their green journey.

Green Grants in France

ADEME Grants

The French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) is an organization that supports environmental transition and is owned by the French government.

ADEME has numerous initiatives, including the “Circular Economy and Waste” program. This program might be interesting to used device businesses as it aims to optimize resources and limit waste. It also supports various companies, including small local ones, on their green journey.

The program’s budget is €164 million, with an additional €236 million under the recovery plan.

NRRP Grants

The French Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) is a major strategy developed in 2020 to address issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan distributes the budget into 73 streams, with a total funding of €40.3 billion.

Used device businesses might benefit from the “Digital transition” initiative. It supports small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in implementing digital technologies. €8.7 billion, or 21.6% of the plan, will be spent on this initiative.

ERDF Grants

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is an international organization supporting SMEs in transitioning to a greener, more inclusive, and more efficient future.

The conditions of programs depend on the region. For example, in Île-de-France, ERDF invests €92 million in digitalization and SME development and €85 million in ecological transition and support for the circular economy.

France Num Grants

France Num helps SMEs, and very small enterprises (VSEs) digitalize. Regarding financial support, France Num provides subsidies that can be spent on purchasing innovative digital equipment. Grant requirements include co-financing from the company: France Num finances 50% of the purchase. Additionally, the project should last at least two years.

Apart from financial support, France Num offers expert advice and business development guidelines.

JTF Grants

The Just Transition Fund (JTF) was created by the European Union to help businesses transition to a climate-neutral economy. It provides help in various regions across Europe that depend most on fossil fuels.

JTF assists companies financially in achieving carbon neutrality. Several types of funding are available, such as non-repayable grants and co-financing.

The program’s overall budget is €19.2 billion for 2021-2027.

Green Loans in France

Unlike grants, loans are repayable and include interest. Besides, they usually offer more flexibility regarding the purposes for which the funding is spent. Loans are provided mostly by banks but also by governments and other financial institutions.

Green loans usually have lower interest rates than average ones. Here is a list of sustainable loans in France that might be useful for used device businesses.

Bpifrance Loans

Bpifrance is the French public development bank that provides green funding options for SMEs. Bpifrance’s Green Bond and Social Bond Frameworks are regularly updated to support company growth in alignment with ecological and social values.

The amount of funding varies depending on the size of the project. Loans for green transition of a business and environmental impact reduction typically range from €10,000 to €500,000.

EIB Loans

The European Investment Bank (EIB) offers numerous loan opportunities that support sustainable and ethical businesses. The most prominent for businesses in our industry might be the “SMEs and mid-caps” program. In 2023, the EIB distributed about €20 billion to support small businesses.
